Popliteal Artery

Popliteal artery is deeply placed and enters the popliteal fossa through the opening in the adductor magnus. It is a continuation of femoral artery and ends at the level of lower border of popliteus, by dividing into two terminal branches, the anterior tibial and posterior tibial arteries.

Relations:

Anteriorly:

Popliteal artery is related anteriorly to popliteal surface of femur, the knee joint and the popliteus muscle.

Posteriorly:

Posteriorly it is related to the popliteal vein, the tibial nerve, fascia and skin.

Branches:

1. Muscular branches

2. Articular branhes to the knee

Terminal branches:

1. Anterior tibial artery

2. Posterior tibial artery
