Flumazenil -Benzodiazepines Antagonist

Flumazenil is a benzodiazepine antagonist, which also binds the same receptors as benzodiazepines.

Has high affinity for benzodiazepine receptor

It behaves as a Competitive antagonist.

It is used as antidote to benzodiazepine overdose.

The sedative effects of benzodiazepines are antagonized.

It is given parentally for symptomatic treatment, producing immediate effects and has a short half life.

If over dosage of long acting benzodiazepine occurs, we have to repeat dose of flumazenil, due to its short half life.

Adverse effects
  1. Agitation
  2. Confusion
  3. Dizziness
  4. Precipitation of abstinence syndrome in patients with benzodiazepine dependence
  5. Nausea with repeated dose
