Lipomas

Lipomas are benign tumors of adipose tissue. These are most common soft tissue tumors of adulthood. The malignant variant of lipoma is liposarcoma.

Morphology

Gross

Lipomas present as well encapsulated soft tissue masses, ranging in size from small to large.

Sites

Most common sites are proximal extremities and trunk. In cut section, lipomas are yellowish orange in color.

Microscopic Appearance

In microscopic appearance, lipomas resemble normal, matured adipocytes with peripheral nuclei, with no evidence of pleomorphism and hyperchromatism. Lipomas can be stained with Sudan IV oil red. These dyes impart a red orange color.
