Tumors of stomach may be classified, based on histology, into:

1.    Epithelial tumors:

a.    Intraepithelial neoplasia -Adenoma

Adenocarcinoma of Stomach
Adenocarcinoma of Stomach

b.    Carcinoma:
i.    Adenocarcinoma:

  • Diffuse type
  • Intestinal type

ii.    Papillary adenocarcinoma
iii.   Tubular adenocarcinoma
iv.   Mucinous adenocarcinoma
v.    Signet-ring cell carcinoma
vi.   Adenosquamous carcinoma
vii.  Squamous cell carcinoma
viii. Small cell carcinoma
ix.   Undifferentiated carcinoma
x.    Others

c.    Carcinoid tumor (Well differentiated endocrine neoplasm)

2.    Non-Epithelial:

a.    Leiomyoma
b.    Schwannoma
c.    Granular cell tumour
d.    Leiomyosarcoma
e.    Gastrointestinal Stromal tumour:

  • Benign
  • Uncertain malignant potential
  • Malignant

f.    Kaposi’s sarcoma
g.    Malignant Lymphomas:

  • Marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of MALT( Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissues)
  • Mantle cell lymphoma
  • Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
  • Others
