A number of diseases are caused by bacteria in man. Some common diseases and their causative bacteria are given below:

Pneumonia

  1. Staphylococcus aureus (most common cause of hospital acquired pneumonia)

Atypical Pneumonia

  1. Legionella

Septicemia (Sepsis)

  1. Streptococcus agalactiae (neonatal)
  2. Staphylococcus epidermidis (neonatal)

  6. Listeria monocytogenes
  7. Salmonella

Gastroenteritis

Endocarditis

Conjunctivitis

  1. Staphylococcus aureus

  5. Neisseria gonorrhoea (neonatal)
  6. C. trachomatis

 Urinary Tract Infection

  1. E. coli (community acquired)

  5. Klebsiella pneumoniae
  6. Serratia marcescens
  7. Proteus mirabilis

Pharyngitis

  • Streptococcus pyogenes

Meningitis

  1. Streptococcus pneumoniae
  2. Neisseria meningitidis (most common cause in ages 2-18 years)

Neonatal Meningitis

Diarrhoea

Dysentery
