Use of Corticosteroids in the Eye

Corticosteroids are used in several diseases of the eyes, the important ones are given below, followed by the contraindications of using corticosteroids:

  1. Chalazion
  2. Atopic Dermatitis
  3. Chronic blepheritis
  4. Childhood blepharokeratoconjuctivitis
  5. Graves Ophthalmolopathy (?)
  6. Proptosis
  7. Optic neuropathy
  8. Idiopathic orbital inflammatory disease
  9. Orbital myositis
  10. Tolosa Hunt syndrome
  11. Wegner’s granulomatosis
  12. Capillary hemangioma
  13. Sjogren’s syndrome
  14. Acute bacterial conjunctivitis (for scarring and membranes)
  15. Adenoviral conjuctivits (for membranes and pseudomembranes)
  16. Allergic conjunctivitis
  17. Mechanically induced papillary conjunctivitis
  18. Mucous membrane pemphigoid
  19. Stevens-Johnson’s syndrome
  20. Superior limbic keratoconjuctivitis
  21. Lignous conjunctivitis
  22. Pingueculum
  23. Pterygium
  24. Conjuctivochalazia
  25. Bacterial keratitis (to prevent scarring, chance for fungi, herpes simplex and mycobacterial growth and delayed epithelial healing)
  26. Disciform keratitis (compulsory)
  27. Necrotizing stromal keratitis
  28. Acute shingles
  29. Syphilitic interstial keratitis
  30. Cogan syndrome
  31. Protozoal keratitis
  32. Onchocerciasis
  33. Marginal keratitis
  34. Phylctenulosis
  35. Ocular rosacea
  36. Mooren ulcer
  37. Terrien marginal degeneration
  38. Thygeson superficial punctuate keratitis
  39. Infective scleritis
  40. Cystoid macular edema

  43. Acute congestive angle closure glaucoma

Contraindications:

  1. Tuberculosis
  2. Viral infections (relative)
  3. Bacterial infections (relative)
  4. Fungal infections (almost absolute)
  5. Peptic ulcer
  6. Deep corneal epithelial defects
